Experienced GM 4L60E specialists since 1987. Free computer diagnostic, lifetime warranty on rebuilds.
The 4L60E is the most rebuilt transmission in our shop β and in the country. GM used this 4-speed in virtually every rear-wheel-drive truck and SUV from 1993 to 2013. We've rebuilt hundreds of these. Common failure points are well understood: 3-4 clutch pack, sunshell, and 2nd gear servo. A quality rebuild with updated parts is extremely reliable.
| Speeds | 4 |
| Type | Automatic |
| Fluid | Dexron VI |
| Fluid Capacity | 11.2 qts total |
| Max Torque | 450 Nm |
| Weight | ~185 lbs |
The 3-4 clutch pack is the most common failure point. GM used too few friction plates in early production. The pack burns out under towing or hard use, causing loss of 3rd gear.
Symptoms: No 3rd gear, slipping on highway, P0756/P0758
The input sunshell cracks or strips under high-torque use, especially in trucks that tow. When it fails you lose all forward gears. Updated hardened replacement shells are available.
Symptoms: Sudden loss of all forward gears, grinding noise, no movement
The 2nd and 4th gear servo bore wears, causing soft or missing 2nd gear engagement and loss of 4th.
Symptoms: Soft 1-2 shift, flare on 2-3 upshift, P0732
The front pump bushing wears causing a fluid leak at the front seal and eventual loss of line pressure.
Symptoms: Transmission fluid leak from front, slip on acceleration, whining noise

When properly rebuilt with updated parts, very reliable. The factory weaknesses are well known and the aftermarket has excellent solutions. A quality rebuild should last 150,000+ miles.
Post-2001 units have a stronger pump and better electronics. But any year can be rebuilt to current spec β we use the same updated parts regardless of year.
Technically yes, but the sunshell and clutch pack clearances are critical. An improperly set clutch pack will fail within 20,000 miles. We see a lot of DIY-rebuilt 4L60Es come through our door.
2β3 days typically. It's one of the most straightforward rebuilds we do.
The 4L65E has a 5-pinion planetary gear set vs. the 4L60E's 4-pinion, making it slightly stronger. Both are rebuilt the same way with similar pricing.
