The 5R55 family (S, W, N variants) was Ford's 5-speed automatic for Explorer, Mustang V6, and Lincoln LS. The 5R55S in the Explorer has a notorious reputation — Ford issued many TSBs for solenoid body failures and band problems. These are common rebuild jobs for us; Chicago-area Explorers and Mustangs bring them in regularly.

The solenoid body is the most common failure. Ford redesigned it multiple times. Aftermarket improved solenoid bodies are available.
Symptoms: Harsh shifts, P0750–P0760, limp mode
The 2-3 accumulator piston wears, causing a harsh and sudden 2-3 shift.
Symptoms: Hard 2-3 shift, clunk at 30 mph
The intermediate band slips on high-mileage units causing soft or missed 2nd gear.
Symptoms: Slip in 2nd gear, flare on 1-2 shift
The coast clutch drum cracks under towing stress in Explorer applications.
Symptoms: Loss of engine braking, slip on decel

It has known weaknesses, yes. But a properly rebuilt unit with updated parts is reliable. The problems come from deferred maintenance and the original underspecified solenoid body.
