Experienced GM 6L80 specialists since 1987. Free computer diagnostic, lifetime warranty on rebuilds.
The 6L80 replaced the 4L60E in GM's half-ton trucks and full-size SUVs. It's a significant improvement in fuel economy and towing but introduced new complexity. The solenoid regulator valve is the most common failure β a cheap fix if caught early, expensive if the valve body is damaged. We see Tahoes, Suburbans, and Silverados with this transmission daily.

The solenoid regulator valve bore wears, causing a pressure drop in the control circuit. Results in erratic shifts and harsh engagement. Sonnax makes an excellent sleeve repair kit.
Symptoms: Harsh shifts, delayed engagement, P0751/P0756
The PCS solenoid regulates line pressure and wears out. Failure causes harsh shifts and pressure codes.
Symptoms: Harsh 1-2 shift, P0961/P0962
6L80 TCC shudder is a known issue, especially in Tahoes and Suburbans used for towing. The converter clutch material wears causing vibration at highway speed.
Symptoms: Shudder at 45β65 mph, P0741
The 5-6 clutch pack wears in high-mileage units, causing 6th gear slip and surging.
Symptoms: Slip in 6th gear / highway, hunting between 5th and 6th, P0776
"Honest diagnosis, fair price, and the repair was done right. Chicago Transmission has been my go-to for years. Wouldn't trust anyone else with my car."
"The free diagnostic alone was worth the trip. They found the problem fast, gave me a written estimate, and completed the work on time. Exceptional service."
"Family owned and it shows. They treated my car like it was their own. The lifetime warranty on my rebuild gives me total peace of mind. Highly recommend."
It's a pressure-control valve in the valve body that regulates hydraulic pressure to the shift solenoids. When the bore wears, pressure drops and shifts become erratic. We can often repair just the bore rather than replacing the full valve body.
150,000β200,000 miles with regular fluid changes. The SRV bore wear is accelerated by long fluid change intervals.
Usually yes. A rebuilt 6L80 with lifetime warranty plus a solid truck body is often better value than buying a newer vehicle.
Absolutely. The 6L80's solenoids are calibrated for Dexron VI's specific viscosity. Using older Dexron III or off-brand ATF accelerates solenoid and bore wear significantly.
The 6L90 is the heavy-duty version (HD trucks, Escalade ESV). Stronger clutch packs and higher torque rating. Same basic architecture, similar failure points.
