Experienced Ford 6R80 specialists since 1987. Free computer diagnostic, lifetime warranty on rebuilds.
The 6R80 is Ford's workhorse 6-speed automatic, co-developed with ZF as a derivative of the ZF 6HP. It's one of the most common transmissions we rebuild in Chicago β F-150s and Mustangs on Lincoln Ave bring them in constantly. Durability is good, but high-mileage units develop predictable solenoid and clutch pack issues.
| Speeds | 6 |
| Type | Automatic |
| Fluid | Mercon LV |
| Fluid Capacity | 13.1 qts total, 6 qt service fill |
| Max Torque | 650 Nm |
| Weight | ~215 lbs |
The solenoid body contains 5 solenoids that control all shift functions. SSA and SSB solenoids fail first, causing delayed or harsh 2-3 and 3-4 shifts.
Symptoms: Delayed upshifts, harsh 2-3 shift, P0755/P0760 codes
TCC shudder is epidemic in the 6R80, especially in F-150s used for towing. The damper spring assembly wears out causing a vibration at highway cruise.
Symptoms: Vibration at 45β55 mph, shudder on light throttle, P0741
High-mileage units (150k+) develop pump wear that causes low line pressure, especially at cold start. The crescent-style pump loses efficiency over time.
Symptoms: Slip on cold morning starts, long engagement from Park, P0868
Bore wear in the valve body causes erratic shift quality and pressure regulation issues. More common in trucks with towing history.
Symptoms: Flare on 1-2 shift, erratic shift points, hunting between gears

"The free diagnostic alone was worth the trip. They found the problem fast, gave me a written estimate, and completed the work on time. Exceptional service."
"Family owned and it shows. They treated my car like it was their own. The lifetime warranty on my rebuild gives me total peace of mind. Highly recommend."
Typically 3β5 days. We pull the transmission Monday, it's back in by Thursday in most cases. We'll give you a firm timeline when we see your specific vehicle.
If the clutches are healthy and you're under 120k miles, yes. A solenoid body swap ($400β$650 parts + labor) can fix shift issues without a full rebuild. We'll tell you honestly which path makes sense.
The torque converter damper springs wear out, especially in trucks used for towing. A transmission flush alone won't fix it β the converter needs to be rebuilt or replaced.
Yes. Any rebuilt 6R80 from our shop carries our lifetime warranty on the rebuild itself for as long as you own the vehicle.
2009β2014 units had more solenoid body issues. 2015+ improved but TCC shudder became more common. We see F-150s from every year β all are serviceable.
