Experienced Subaru Lineartronic CVT (TR690 / TR580) specialists since 1987. Free computer diagnostic, lifetime warranty on rebuilds.
Subaru's Lineartronic CVT uses a chain (TR690) rather than a push belt, making it different from Nissan and Honda CVTs. In AWD Subarus, the CVT integrates with the front/rear torque split. Generally more robust than Nissan's CVT, but fails from extended intervals and overheating. Chicago-area Subaru owners bring Outbacks and Foresters in regularly.

Generally yes β the chain design is more durable than Nissan's steel push belt.
They're not epidemic, but high-mileage Outbacks with neglected fluid do come through. The chain-based design handles wear better.
Subaru CVTF-II β Idemitsu makes the OEM fluid. Do not use generic CVT fluid.
