Experienced ZF 6HP (6HP19 / 6HP26 / 6HP28 / 6HP32) specialists since 1987. Free computer diagnostic, lifetime warranty on rebuilds.
The ZF 6HP is a family of 6-speed automatics built by ZF Friedrichshafen and installed in BMW, Audi, Land Rover, and others. Sophisticated Mechatronic control unit (solenoids + TCU in one assembly) is the primary failure point. The Mechatronic is dealer-priced at $2,000+; we source quality remanufactured units. Otherwise a robust transmission when maintained with the right fluid.
| Speeds | 6 |
| Type | Automatic RWD/AWD |
| Fluid | ZF Lifeguard 6 (Shell M1375.4) |
| Fluid Capacity | 9.5 qts (6HP26) |
| Max Torque | 450 Nm (6HP26) β 700 Nm (6HP32) |
The integrated Mechatronic combines 7 solenoids and the TCU in a single assembly. Electrical failure, solenoid wear, or corrosion causes shift failure, limp mode, or complete loss of drive. Remanufactured replacements are available.
Symptoms: Limp mode, no upshift above 3rd, P1700-range codes, EGS warning light
ZF 6HP converters develop TCC shudder on BMW applications, especially with extended fluid intervals.
Symptoms: Shudder at 50β70 mph, P0741
Flex plate cracking causes a metallic knock at startup or at specific RPM β often misdiagnosed as engine noise.
Symptoms: Metallic knock at startup or specific RPM
Long ZF Lifeguard 6 intervals (or wrong fluid) burn the clutch packs. Loss of specific gears follows.
Symptoms: Slip in specific gears, P0750βP0760 range

"Family owned and it shows. They treated my car like it was their own. The lifetime warranty on my rebuild gives me total peace of mind. Highly recommend."
It's a combined unit containing all shift solenoids and the transmission control module. When it fails, the transmission goes into limp mode. ZF designed it for serviceability β remanufactured units are widely available.
Yes. The 6HP's solenoids are calibrated for ZF Lifeguard 6's specific friction modifier package. Using generic ATF will accelerate Mechatronic and clutch wear.
Usually rebuilt. The internals are robust β it's typically the Mechatronic and/or torque converter that need attention.
4β6 days, including Mechatronic sourcing and programming.
Yes. Range Rovers with the 6HP26 or 6HP28 are a regular job for us.
