Continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) are now standard equipment in millions of vehicles - from the Honda Accord to the Nissan Rogue to the Subaru Outback. While CVTs offer improved fuel economy and a smooth driving experience, they come with their own set of unique failure modes. Here's what every CVT driver should know.
How a CVT Works (Briefly)
Unlike a traditional automatic with fixed gear ratios, a CVT uses a pair of variable-diameter pulleys connected by a metal belt or chain. By continuously adjusting the pulley diameters, the CVT can theoretically achieve any gear ratio within its range - providing seamless, stepless acceleration. The trade-off is mechanical complexity and some unique failure points.
Common CVT Problems
1. Belt or Chain Wear
The drive belt or chain is the heart of a CVT. Over time - especially without regular fluid changes - it stretches, wears, and eventually fails. This is often one of the most involved CVT repairs, and the scope depends heavily on the vehicle and unit design.
2. Pulley Wear
The steel pulleys develop wear grooves over time. Worn pulleys cause belt slippage, shudder, and loss of efficiency. Pulley replacement is typically done as part of a full CVT rebuild.

3. CVT Shudder
Perhaps the most common complaint from CVT owners is a shudder or vibration at certain speeds (usually 25-45 mph). This is caused by belt slippage on the pulleys and is often an early sign of fluid breakdown or belt wear. In many cases, a CVT fluid service can resolve early shudder.
4. Fluid Breakdown
CVT fluid is highly specialized and degrades faster than conventional ATF. Most manufacturers recommend changing CVT fluid every 30,000 miles, but many owners don't do it - or dealers tell them it's a "sealed for life" unit. It's not. Neglected CVT fluid is the leading cause of early CVT failure.
