2010 - 2013 Gen 1: 6-speed automatic (BVGA) with SH-AWD; 3.7L J37A V6; 300 hp Gen 1 SH-AWD: Super Handling All-Wheel Drive with rear torque vectoring 2024 - present Gen 2: Single-speed fixed-ratio electric motor drive; pure EV platform with SH-AWD Gen 2: Type S has dual motors, 500 hp; base has single motor
Gen 1 ZDX BVGA diagnosis uses Honda HDS. Z1 ATF flush and inspection first for shudder. Torque converter test under highway load. SH-AWD rear differential is diagnosed separately - fluid change first, clutch pack inspection if vibration persists after fluid service. Gen 2 EV ZDX drivetrain concerns should be handled with high-voltage safety precautions, reduction gear fluid inspection, bearing assessment by listening under load, and a software version check for AWD calibration issues. Gen 2 is early in its service life - service data is still being built.
Gen 1 BVGA: Honda Z1 ATF, approximately 7 - 8 quarts; SH-AWD rear diff: Honda Ultra High Performance ATF; Gen 2: EV reduction gear fluid per Acura spec
Gen 1 fluid service: same day; SH-AWD service: same day; Gen 1 torque converter: 2 - 3 days; Gen 1 full rebuild: 4 - 6 days; Gen 2 EV service: varies
Every vehicle needs diagnosis before anyone can promise a repair path. These are the situations we help organize before you decide what to do next.
Tell us when it happens, whether reverse still works, and if warning lights are on. A scan and fluid check come before guessing at a rebuild.
Fluid condition, leak location, and driving distance matter. If the vehicle is slipping badly or overheating, towing may be the safer next step.
A failed solenoid, valve body, converter, or internal clutch problem can lead to very different repair paths. The goal is a clear diagnosis and written estimate.
Super Handling All-Wheel Drive - Acura's torque-vectoring AWD system that can direct more power to the outer rear wheel during cornering. On Gen 1, it uses clutch packs in the rear differential. On Gen 2 EV, it's accomplished by independent motor speed control.
The Gen 1 ZDX uses the BVGA 6-speed, which is related to but different from the MDX's BGLA unit. They share design DNA but have different calibrations and physical dimensions.
Every 30,000 miles - the rear SH-AWD differential fluid is separate from the main transmission and should be changed more frequently than Honda sometimes recommends. Degraded SH-AWD fluid causes vibration and clutch pack wear.
The Gen 2 ZDX launched in 2024 - it's too early to have a complete reliability picture. The underlying platform (GM Ultium EV platform with Acura engineering) is well-engineered. We'll update our service knowledge as Gen 2 vehicles reach higher mileage.
Call first so the shop can confirm the exact concern. Reduction gear service, seal and bearing work, and software diagnostics may be appropriate locally, while battery-pack or high-voltage electrical faults should be coordinated with an Acura dealer.
Same-day appointments available. Honest estimates, no surprises. We've been doing this since 1987.
