1996 - 2000: 4-speed automatic (41TE); 3.0L or 3.3L V6 2001 - 2010: 4-speed automatic (41TE updated) or optional 6-speed (62TE available late in run) 2011 - 2020: 6-speed automatic (62TE) with 3.6L Pentastar V6; front-wheel drive Production ended 2020 - replaced by Chrysler Pacifica and Voyager
Grand Caravan 41TE and 62TE are extremely common repairs - we have extensive experience with both. 41TE solenoid pack is the primary failure: full pack replacement with fresh ATF+4. 62TE follows the Journey protocol - solenoid pack, then rebuild if contamination is found. ATF+4 is required for both transmissions - incorrect fluid causes premature solenoid failure. Output shaft seal on 41TE is a straightforward replacement. Full rebuilds on both units are well-established procedures with readily available parts.
Chrysler ATF+4 for both 41TE and 62TE; approximately 9 quarts; ATF+4 is proprietary - do not substitute
Fluid service: same day; solenoid pack: 1 - 2 days; output seal: 1 day; full rebuild: 4 - 6 days
Every vehicle needs diagnosis before anyone can promise a repair path. These are the situations we help organize before you decide what to do next.
Tell us when it happens, whether reverse still works, and if warning lights are on. A scan and fluid check come before guessing at a rebuild.
Fluid condition, leak location, and driving distance matter. If the vehicle is slipping badly or overheating, towing may be the safer next step.
A failed solenoid, valve body, converter, or internal clutch problem can lead to very different repair paths. The goal is a clear diagnosis and written estimate.
The solenoid packs in both the 41TE and 62TE are sensitive to ATF+4 degradation and heat from minivan duty cycles - lots of family load, occasional towing, Chicago stop-and-go. Solenoids wear progressively, and once one fails, the others are typically not far behind. Replacing as a pack is the right approach.
Every 30,000 - 40,000 miles with ATF+4. The 'lifetime' fluid claim on later Caravans is not realistic for Chicago conditions. Regular service significantly extends solenoid life.
Depends on vehicle condition. The Caravan body and Pentastar 3.6L V6 are durable - if the body is sound and engine is healthy, a $2,600 - 3,600 rebuild is reasonable for years of additional reliable service.
The 41TE is a 4-speed automatic used through 2010; the 62TE is the 6-speed replacement starting around 2011. The 62TE is more fuel-efficient but has a similar solenoid reliability challenge to the 41TE.
Yes - we offer same-day fluid service. If you're coming in for a scheduled oil change, adding a transmission fluid check or flush is easy to combine.
Same-day appointments available. Honest estimates, no surprises. We've been doing this since 1987.
