Known Honda Accord Transmission Problems

• B7XA (1998–2002 V6): Third clutch failure — Honda's most notorious defect. The 3rd clutch loses lubrication and burns out, causing loss of 3rd gear. Honda extended the warranty multiple times
• MLYA (2013–2017): MLPS (Mode/Lock Position Switch) failure causing incorrect gear position reporting and erratic shifts
• 2018+ CVT: Belt wear developing at 60–90k miles when fluid is not changed — similar to Civic CVT issues

Warning Signs — When to Bring It In

• Loss of 3rd gear — slipping between 2nd and 4th (B7XA)
• Transmission slipping intermittently — MLPS switch failure
• Shudder at low speed — CVT belt wear
• P0730 code (incorrect gear ratio)
• Reverse intermittent — MLPS failure

B7XA 3rd clutch failure always requires a full rebuild — there's no patch for a failed 3rd clutch. We use Honda OEM friction clutches, not aftermarket, for all Honda rebuilds. MLPS: targeted replacement possible ($200–350). CVT: fluid service first, belt assessment if shudder continues.
