2014 - 2017 (Gen 1 / EX35 successor): 7-speed automatic (7AT) rear-wheel drive or AWD; 3.7L V6 2019 - present (Gen 2): CVT (Xtronic) paired with VC-Turbo 2.0L variable-compression engine; FWD or AWD Gen 2 AWD: rear electric motor assist on some trims (e-AWD)
Gen 1 QX50 7AT diagnosis uses Nissan/Infiniti Consult III. Solenoid valve body replacement covers most shift complaints on the 7AT. Gen 2 CVT diagnosis: check Xtronic CVT fluid condition and level first - Nissan Matic S CVT fluid is required. Belt slip under load is assessed by pressure and belt ratio testing. Overheating diagnosis includes cooler flow verification and load-test under controlled conditions. e-AWD coupling noise: software update first, then motor coupling inspection. CVT rebuild is available but fluid replacement and software update resolve many Gen 2 complaints before rebuild is necessary.
Gen 1 7AT: Nissan Matic K ATF; Gen 2 CVT: Nissan Matic S CVT fluid (required - do not substitute standard ATF); approximately 7 - 8 quarts
Fluid service: same day; Gen 1 valve body: 1 - 2 days; Gen 2 CVT belt inspection: 1 - 2 days; CVT rebuild: 4 - 6 days
Every vehicle needs diagnosis before anyone can promise a repair path. These are the situations we help organize before you decide what to do next.
Tell us when it happens, whether reverse still works, and if warning lights are on. A scan and fluid check come before guessing at a rebuild.
Fluid condition, leak location, and driving distance matter. If the vehicle is slipping badly or overheating, towing may be the safer next step.
A failed solenoid, valve body, converter, or internal clutch problem can lead to very different repair paths. The goal is a clear diagnosis and written estimate.
The VC-Turbo CVT has been more durable than earlier Nissan CVTs, but it is sensitive to fluid maintenance. Regular Matic S CVT fluid changes every 30,000 - 40,000 miles are essential. The variable compression engine's heat output makes clean fluid even more critical.
The VC-Turbo can vary its compression ratio from 8:1 to 14:1 on the fly. During this transition, torque output fluctuates - the CVT must handle these variations smoothly. It requires software calibration unique to the VC-Turbo and CVT pairing.
RPM surge or slip during acceleration, shudder at highway speed, a burnt smell from the transmission area, or CVT overheating warning are all signs. Bring it in for fluid inspection and a loaded road test before the problem worsens.
Yes - we rebuild QX50 Xtronic CVT units with new belt, pulleys, and bearings. Belt replacement cost is $1,800 - 2,800; full rebuild is $2,600 - 3,800. If fluid contamination is caught early, a flush may delay or prevent the need for mechanical work.
Yes - the Gen 1 7AT AWD transfer case and rear differential each have separate fluids. Gen 2 e-AWD has a rear motor coupling fluid. All should be inspected every 30,000 - 45,000 miles.
Same-day appointments available. Honest estimates, no surprises. We've been doing this since 1987.
