2006 - 2011 Gen 3: 6-speed automatic (A761E/A960E) rear-wheel drive; GS350 V6 or GS460 V8 2012 - 2020 Gen 4: 8-speed automatic (AB60E/A860E) rear-wheel drive or AWD; GS350, GS450h hybrid, GS200t GS450h: CVT/hybrid electric drive - no traditional automatic; electric motor assist Production ended 2020
GS diagnosis uses Toyota Techstream or equivalent. A760E shudder: Toyota Type IV fluid replacement (Lexus-specified) is first step; torque converter replacement follows if shudder persists. A860E: check software version for shift hunting; calibration update from Lexus often resolves this. Cold-start delay on A860E is a valve body or accumulator issue - mechanical inspection required. AWD center differential service is separate from main transmission. GS450h hybrid drive unit requires specialized hybrid technician for CVT and electric motor assessment.
Toyota/Lexus WS ATF (World Standard); approximately 9 - 10 quarts; do not use Dexron VI or Type IV as a substitute in Gen 4 models
Fluid service: same day; software update: same day; valve body: 1 - 2 days; torque converter: 2 - 3 days; full rebuild: 4 - 6 days
Every vehicle needs diagnosis before anyone can promise a repair path. These are the situations we help organize before you decide what to do next.
Tell us when it happens, whether reverse still works, and if warning lights are on. A scan and fluid check come before guessing at a rebuild.
Fluid condition, leak location, and driving distance matter. If the vehicle is slipping badly or overheating, towing may be the safer next step.
A failed solenoid, valve body, converter, or internal clutch problem can lead to very different repair paths. The goal is a clear diagnosis and written estimate.
The A860E is generally very reliable - the main issues are software-related shift hunting (resolved by updates) and cold-start engagement delay (resolved by valve body service). With proper WS ATF maintenance, A860E units routinely exceed 150,000 miles.
Toyota/Lexus WS (World Standard) ATF - not Dexron VI or older Toyota Type IV. WS ATF is a low-viscosity fluid specifically formulated for the A860E's close-tolerance valve body.
The GS450h uses a hybrid CVT/electric drive system - no traditional multi-speed automatic. It is an electromechanical continuously variable system, so diagnosis should use hybrid-aware safety procedures and the right scan data before anyone treats it like a conventional transmission failure.
Torque converter clutch shudder on Gen 3 A760E models - the lock-up clutch slips under light load. Toyota/Lexus WS ATF or Type IV (depending on generation) flush often helps. Torque converter replacement is the definitive fix if shudder persists.
Yes - we have Lexus-specific diagnostic software, keep WS ATF in stock, and stock rebuild kits for both A760E and A860E units. We also have experience with GS450h hybrid drivetrain service.
Same-day appointments available. Honest estimates, no surprises. We've been doing this since 1987.
