2010 - 2019: 6-speed SelectShift automatic (6F55); front-wheel drive or AWD 3.5L EcoBoost: 6F55 with higher shift pressure calibration for 355 hp output 3.7L V6: 6F50 standard; lower-output variant AWD models: PTU + rear drive unit (RDU) Production ended 2019
MKT is a heavy-for-its-class crossover - the 6F55 transmission works harder than in a lighter vehicle, accelerating wear. Diagnosis uses Ford IDS. Fluid inspection is first - Mercon LV is required; burnt or dark fluid indicates overheating. PTU and RDU are checked separately from the main transmission. AWD vibration sources must be isolated between RDU clutch pack and main transmission torque converter. EcoBoost MKT models with solenoid wear often benefit from full solenoid pack replacement given the additional heat exposure.
Ford Mercon LV ATF (6F50/6F55), approximately 9 quarts; PTU: Ford XT-9-QMC; RDU: Ford-specified differential fluid
Fluid service: same day; PTU/RDU service: same day; solenoid pack: 1 - 2 days; torque converter: 2 - 3 days; full rebuild: 4 - 6 days
Every vehicle needs diagnosis before anyone can promise a repair path. These are the situations we help organize before you decide what to do next.
Tell us when it happens, whether reverse still works, and if warning lights are on. A scan and fluid check come before guessing at a rebuild.
Fluid condition, leak location, and driving distance matter. If the vehicle is slipping badly or overheating, towing may be the safer next step.
A failed solenoid, valve body, converter, or internal clutch problem can lead to very different repair paths. The goal is a clear diagnosis and written estimate.
The MKT is mechanically similar to the Ford Flex - the drivetrain is proven, but the heavier weight means transmission wear happens faster. Regular Mercon LV fluid changes every 40,000 miles are essential.
RDU (Rear Drive Unit) is the rear differential assembly that drives the rear wheels in AWD mode. It contains its own clutch pack and gear oil. RDU fluid should be changed every 30,000 - 45,000 miles; neglecting it causes clutch wear and AWD vibration.
The 355 hp EcoBoost generates significant heat. The factory cooler is adequate for normal use but may be overwhelmed during extended highway grades with full passenger load. An auxiliary transmission cooler is a worthwhile upgrade if you frequently carry full loads or tow.
Full rebuild: $2,800 - 3,900. Remanufactured unit: $3,400 - 4,800 installed. Solenoid-only repair without rebuild: $700 - 1,200.
Yes - it shares the 6F50/6F55 with Ford Edge, Flex, and MKX. Parts availability is excellent. Production ending in 2019 doesn't affect parts supply for the next decade.
Same-day appointments available. Honest estimates, no surprises. We've been doing this since 1987.
