2014 - present: CVT (INVECS-III) on 1.2L 3-cylinder; front-wheel drive only Minimal powertrain changes through current production CVT sized for economy - not performance-oriented
Mirage CVT is minimally-stressed in normal commuting but sensitive to fluid maintenance. CVTF-J4 condition check - degraded fluid is the primary cause of shudder and slip. Belt inspection at 80,000+ miles. Input seal replacement for seep. Cold-weather hesitation is normal behavior for a 1.2L at extreme temperatures and not a defect. Full CVT rebuild is available but the vehicle's value proposition must be weighed - Mirage's low market value may make rebuild less cost-effective than a remanufactured unit.
Mitsubishi CVTF-J4; approximately 5 quarts; replacement recommended every 30,000 miles
Fluid service: same day; input seal: 1 day; CVT belt inspection: 1 day; full rebuild: 3 - 5 days
Every vehicle needs diagnosis before anyone can promise a repair path. These are the situations we help organize before you decide what to do next.
Tell us when it happens, whether reverse still works, and if warning lights are on. A scan and fluid check come before guessing at a rebuild.
Fluid condition, leak location, and driving distance matter. If the vehicle is slipping badly or overheating, towing may be the safer next step.
A failed solenoid, valve body, converter, or internal clutch problem can lead to very different repair paths. The goal is a clear diagnosis and written estimate.
For light commuting duty, yes - the CVT is appropriately sized for the 1.2L engine. It requires more frequent fluid changes than larger CVTs. With CVTF-J4 changes every 30,000 miles, the CVT can reach 120,000+ miles without major service.
CVTs hold RPM higher than traditional automatics during acceleration, then drop to a cruise RPM once speed is maintained. The 1.2L engine's small power output means it needs higher RPM to generate enough force - this is normal, not a defect.
It depends on the vehicle's age and condition. Given the Mirage's lower market value, a full rebuild at $1,900 - 2,800 may approach the car's value. A remanufactured CVT ($2,400 - 3,400) is an option if the vehicle is otherwise in excellent shape. We'll give an honest assessment.
Mitsubishi CVTF-J4. Do not use standard ATF or generic CVT fluid - they cause belt slip. CVTF-J4 should be changed every 30,000 miles for Chicago city use.
The Honda CVT used in the Fit and Civic is more broadly available and has more extensive service data. The Mirage CVT is competent but more finicky about fluid spec. Both require regular fluid maintenance to stay healthy.
Same-day appointments available. Honest estimates, no surprises. We've been doing this since 1987.
