2000–2009: 4-speed automatic (4EAT/TZ1A4Z) on 2.5L and 3.0L H6. 2010–2014: 5-speed automatic (TR580) on 2.5L; Lineartronic CVT on 3.6L. 2015–2019: Lineartronic CVT on all Legacy variants. 2020–2024: Lineartronic CVT on 2.5L I4 and 2.4T turbo. All Legacy: Symmetrical AWD.
Legacy's CVT and TR580 follow the same repair procedures as Outback — they share identical drivetrains. The integrated AWD system means we always inspect the transfer clutch and center differential when servicing the transmission. Subaru CVTF-II is the required fluid for Lineartronic CVT.
CVT: Subaru CVTF-II (mandatory). TR580: Subaru ATF HP or equivalent. 4EAT: Dexron III compatible. Change CVT every 30,000 miles.
TR580 solenoid: 1–2 days. TR580 rebuild: 3–4 days. CVT rebuild: 3–4 days.

TR580 solenoid A failure — very common on 2010–2014 Legacy. Often repairable for $450–700 without a full rebuild.
CVT chain wear — most common on 2015+ Legacy at 80–120k miles. Severity determines whether a fluid service helps or a chain replacement is needed.
It can — Subaru requires all four tires within 1/4" of each other. Different-sized tires cause the AWD transfer clutch to work excessively, accelerating wear.
Every 30,000 miles with Subaru CVTF-II. Using any other fluid — including generic CVT fluid — will accelerate chain wear.
With proper fluid maintenance every 30,000 miles, the Lineartronic CVT can last 150k+ miles. Neglect is the primary cause of early failure.
