The 45RFE and its 5-speed variant the 545RFE were Chrysler's primary automatic for trucks and SUVs in the early-to-mid 2000s. Common in Jeep Grand Cherokees, they're a moderately robust unit with well-known failure points: the overdrive clutch pack and governor pressure solenoid. We see many of these on Chicago-area Grand Cherokees.

The GP solenoid is the most common failure β causes P0745, harsh shifts, and erratic pressure regulation.

O/D clutch burn-out causes loss of 4th/5th gear, especially in towing applications.

Input clutch failure causes loss of 1st and 2nd gear drive.

The 545RFE adds a true 5th gear (overdrive). Many trucks came with the 545RFE but only a software/hardware upgrade separates them from the 45RFE.
