Transmission repair cost in Chicago ranges from $89 for a fluid change to $3,500+ for a full rebuild. The right repair depends on what's actually wrong β which is why a free diagnostic is always the right first step.
Transmission Repair Cost by Service Type
Not every transmission problem requires a rebuild. Here's what Chicago shops charge for specific repairs in 2026:
Transmission Fluid Change β $89β$199
A fluid drain-and-fill or full flush is the most common transmission service. Most manufacturers recommend it every 30,000β60,000 miles. Our current offer: $89 fluid change + inspection β includes a test drive and visual inspection at no extra charge.
Transmission Fluid Leak Repair β $150β$600
The specific cost depends on what's leaking. A pan gasket runs $150β$250. A front pump seal or rear extension seal runs $300β$500 because it requires dropping the transmission. An output shaft seal is $200β$350.
Solenoid Replacement β $350β$900
Solenoids are electronically controlled valves that regulate fluid flow and gear engagement. A single solenoid runs $350β$600 installed. A solenoid pack (full replacement of all solenoids) runs $600β$900. Solenoid failure often triggers P0750, P0755, or P0760 codes.
Torque Converter Replacement β $550β$1,100
A failing torque converter causes shudder (vibration at 30β50 mph), slipping, or overheating. Torque converter replacement requires transmission removal, which adds significant labor. Total installed cost is $550β$1,100 depending on the vehicle.
Valve Body Repair or Replacement β $400β$1,200
The valve body is the hydraulic control center of the transmission. A damaged or worn valve body causes erratic shifts, harsh engagement, or slipping. Repair vs replacement depends on the extent of damage β some valve bodies are serviceable, others need replacement.
Transmission Rebuild β $1,800β$3,500
A complete rebuild disassembles the transmission and replaces all wear items. This is the correct repair when internal damage is widespread β not when a single component has failed. See our detailed rebuild cost breakdown for pricing by vehicle type.
Transmission Replacement (Used Unit) β $1,200β$2,400
Used transmissions cost $400β$900 for the unit, plus $800β$1,200 labor. They come without a warranty history and carry real risk of early failure. We recommend this only when the vehicle's age and value don't justify a rebuild.
How Shops Decide What to Charge
Transmission pricing is driven by three factors:
- Labor hours: Chicago shops charge $125β$155/hr. Removing a transmission on a front-wheel-drive Honda takes 3 hours. A rear-wheel-drive truck takes 2 hours. A unibody AWD crossover can take 5 hours.
- Parts cost: OEM parts cost more but are spec'd for your specific vehicle. Aftermarket parts are cheaper and adequate for most repairs. We use whichever is correct for the application.
- Diagnostic labor: Most shops charge $89β$125 for a transmission diagnostic. We do it for free.
Repair or Replace? The Decision Framework
The answer comes down to the nature of the problem and the vehicle's value:
- Single component failure (solenoid, sensor, leak): Targeted repair. No reason to rebuild if only one part failed.
- Internal wear across multiple components: Full rebuild is more cost-effective than replacing worn parts one by one.
- Vehicle worth less than the repair: Replacement with a used unit may be the right call β though we'll always be honest with you about this.
We diagnose before we quote. A free computer diagnostic tells us exactly what's failing so you're not paying for a rebuild when a solenoid swap would fix it.
