A transmission warranty is only as good as what's in writing. "2-year / 24,000-mile warranty" is one of the most misused phrases in automotive repair - some shops mean it literally, others mean 12 months. Before you authorize any transmission work, you need to understand exactly what you're getting and what can void the coverage.
Types of Transmission Warranties
Rebuild Warranty (Best Coverage)
A rebuild warranty covers the complete rebuilt transmission - all components that were replaced during the rebuild process. A shop that stands behind its rebuilds will offer:
- Labor coverage: If the transmission needs to come back out, the shop covers the R&R labor, not just the parts
- Parts coverage: All wear items replaced during the rebuild - clutches, seals, solenoids, filter
- Time and mileage: Ask for the exact time, mileage, parts, labor, and exclusion terms in writing.
At Chicago Transmission, our rebuilds carry a 2-year / 24,000-mile warranty covering both parts and labor. This is our confidence in the work - if something fails that we rebuilt, we fix it at no charge.
Repair Warranty (Good Coverage for Targeted Work)
When only specific components are replaced (solenoid, valve body, torque converter), the warranty covers the specific parts and installation labor listed on the written estimate. A 2-year / 24,000-mile warranty is a realistic industry benchmark for qualifying rebuilds and major repairs; smaller targeted repairs should be confirmed on the invoice before the work is authorized.
Used Transmission Warranty (Limited Coverage)
Used (salvage) transmissions typically carry a 30 - 90 day warranty on the unit only. This usually does not cover labor to reinstall the transmission if the unit fails - which can be - in labor alone. Read the used unit warranty carefully before accepting it.
What Can Void a Transmission Warranty
Fluid Neglect
The most common warranty voiding situation: the warranty requires fluid changes at specified intervals, and the customer doesn't do them. If a rebuilt transmission fails at 40,000 miles with fluid that was never changed, the shop will rightfully argue the failure was caused by fluid neglect, not the rebuild quality. Get the fluid service interval in writing, and keep receipts.
External Damage
Transmission damage from an accident, road debris impact, or flood is not covered by a repair warranty - the warranty covers the components that were replaced, not the whole transmission against all future events.
Using Non-Specified Fluid
Installing the wrong fluid type (generic ATF when OEM spec is required) can void a warranty. This is especially important for Honda, Toyota, and BMW transmissions where incorrect fluid causes TCC shudder and clutch wear relatively quickly.
Unauthorized Repairs
If another shop opens the transmission during the warranty period, the original shop's warranty is typically voided. This is a legitimate protection - if a third party modifies or damages the work, the original shop can't be held responsible.
Questions to Ask Before Authorizing Work
- Is the warranty for parts only, or parts and labor?
- What is the time and mileage limit?
- What fluid spec is required to maintain the warranty, and at what intervals?
- Is the warranty transferable if I sell the vehicle?
- What documentation will I receive?
- What specifically is NOT covered?
