Known Acura MDX Transmission Problems

• BDKA 5AT (2003–2006): 3rd gear clutch pack failure — same Honda/Acura class-action defect as Odyssey. Loss of 3rd gear at highway speed. Full rebuild required
• ZF 9HP (2014–2020): Valve body solenoid wear identical to Cherokee 9HP48 — harsh shifts especially cold, hunting at low speed. PCM updates help but mechanical wear requires valve body service
• SH-AWD rear unit (2007–2020): Rear differential clutch pack wear causing vibration and binding on turns at high mileage

2003–2006 BDKA: full rebuild required — same approach as Odyssey 3rd clutch failure, Honda OEM friction material. ZF 9HP (2014+): PCM update first, then valve body service or rebuild.
