G07 X7 (2019+): 8-speed ZF automatic (8HP76) on all powertrains. Engines: 3.0L I6 (xDrive40i), 4.4L V8 (xDrive50i/M60i), M60i V8. xDrive AWD on all X7 models. M62 (X7 M60i): Upgraded 8HP with M-specific programming.
The X7 uses BMW's largest ZF 8HP variant - the 8HP76, rated for high torque output from the V8 and I6 engines. Repair follows standard ZF 8HP procedures. Given the X7's weight and AWD demand, fluid changes every 40,000 miles are especially important.
ZF LifeGuardFluid 8 (LGF 8) - mandatory. Change every 40,000 miles.
Verify exact spec on the dipstick label or owner's manual before fill. Recommended change interval: every 60,000 miles for normal driving, 30,000 miles under severe service (towing, stop-and-go, hot climates). Pan service typically takes 6 - 8 quarts; a full fluid exchange takes 10 - 14 quarts depending on cooler-line capacity.
8HP76 valve body service: 1 - 2 days. Full rebuild: 4 - 5 days.
Fluid service and inspection complete the same day. Solenoid or sensor replacement: 1 day. Torque converter or seal repair: 2 - 3 days. Full rebuild with road test: 4 - 6 days. Time estimates assume parts in stock - call (312) 626-8759 to verify availability for your specific vehicle.
Every vehicle needs diagnosis before anyone can promise a repair path. These are the situations we help organize before you decide what to do next.
Tell us when it happens, whether reverse still works, and if warning lights are on. A scan and fluid check come before guessing at a rebuild.
Fluid condition, leak location, and driving distance matter. If the vehicle is slipping badly or overheating, towing may be the safer next step.
A failed solenoid, valve body, converter, or internal clutch problem can lead to very different repair paths. The goal is a clear diagnosis and written estimate.
Harsh shifts from Park into Drive or on 1-2 upshift are transmission wear - not programming. The 8HP76 solenoid wear produces distinguishable harshness vs. sport mode firmness.
8HP76 TCC shudder - same pattern as X5 and 7 Series V8. ZF LGF8 fluid exchange is the first step ($299). If it persists, torque converter replacement.
4 - 5 days. The X7 is a large vehicle - transmission installation takes longer than smaller BMW models.
The xDrive transfer case is serviced separately from the main transmission. We inspect and fluid-service the transfer case when rebuilding the main unit.
Dealers typically quote $5,500 - 9,000. Our price for the same rebuild: $3,200 - 4,500.
Same-day appointments available. Honest estimates, no surprises. We've been doing this since 1987.
