ATS transmission diagnosis uses GM Tech2 or GDS2 scan tool for full manufacturer-specific codes. 6L45/6L50 shudder diagnosis includes torque converter lock-up test under highway cruise conditions. Fluid replacement with Dexron HP (required for 6L45/6L50) and friction modifier treatment often resolves mild shudder. If persistent, torque converter replacement is recommended. Cold-start engagement delay is typically a valve body or accumulator issue. ATS-V 8L90 harsh upshifts are calibration-related - TCM software update is the first repair step.
6L45/6L50: GM Dexron HP ATF (required - do NOT use Dexron VI), approximately 7 - 8 quarts; 8L90: Dexron HP, approximately 9 quarts
Fluid service: same day; solenoid/valve body: 1 - 2 days; torque converter: 2 - 3 days; full rebuild: 4 - 6 days
Every vehicle needs diagnosis before anyone can promise a repair path. These are the situations we help organize before you decide what to do next.
Tell us when it happens, whether reverse still works, and if warning lights are on. A scan and fluid check come before guessing at a rebuild.
Fluid condition, leak location, and driving distance matter. If the vehicle is slipping badly or overheating, towing may be the safer next step.
A failed solenoid, valve body, converter, or internal clutch problem can lead to very different repair paths. The goal is a clear diagnosis and written estimate.
Torque converter clutch shudder is the most common cause on 6L45/6L50-equipped ATS models. The lock-up clutch slips under light load. A Dexron HP fluid flush often helps - if shudder continues, torque converter replacement is needed.
Yes - GM specifies Dexron HP (not Dexron VI) for the 6L45, 6L50, and 8L90. Using Dexron VI in these transmissions increases shudder and accelerates clutch wear. We always verify the correct fluid spec before service.
The 8L90 is generally robust, but early calibration caused harsh upshifts under aggressive acceleration. TCM software updates from GM significantly improved shift quality. Updated units have been reliable well past 100,000 miles.
With Dexron HP fluid changes every 40,000 - 45,000 miles, 6L45/6L50 units routinely reach 150,000+ miles. The 8L90 in the ATS-V is similarly durable with proper maintenance.
Yes - we rebuild 8L90 units with performance-rated clutch packs. ATS-V owners often choose a rebuild over replacement to preserve the original matching unit for the vehicle.
