2000–2006: 4-speed automatic (4L60-E or 4L80-E on 3/4-ton). 2007–2013: 6-speed automatic (6L80) on 5.3L and 6.2L V8. 2014–2020: 6-speed automatic (6L80) on 5.3L; 6L90 on 6.2L. 2021–2024: 10-speed automatic (10L80) on 5.3L; 10L90 on 6.2L. 4WD models include transfer case (AutoTrac or NV246).
The Suburban is a high-mileage vehicle often used for towing and hauling. 6L80 pump failures are addressed with a complete rebuild — pump slide and rotor replacement along with clutch packs and solenoids. 10L80 harshness is often software-related first, then mechanical. Transfer case service should be addressed concurrently with transmission work when applicable.
6L80/6L90 uses Dexron VI. 10L80/10L90 uses Dexron HP. 4L60-E uses Dexron VI. Transfer case: AutoTrak II for most NV246 units. Change every 45,000 miles.

Classic 6L80 pump pressure drop — as clearances open up with heat, the worn pump can't maintain line pressure. A full rebuild (including new pump components) is the fix: $1,900–2,600.
That's the 4L60-E sun shell failure — one of GM's most common failures. When the sun shell cracks, the transmission drops 3rd and 4th simultaneously. Full rebuild required: $1,500–2,100.
Every 30,000 miles for towing use. Suburban Dexron HP (10L80) should be changed more frequently than GM's 45,000-mile recommendation when the vehicle regularly tows.
Likely the transfer case chain — very common on high-mileage 4WD Suburbans. The chain stretches and causes clunking. Transfer case rebuild: $1,200–1,800.
