48RE: full rebuild with updated governor solenoid and overdrive drum. 68RFE: solenoid pack replacement if clutches are intact; full rebuild if OD clutches are burned. For tuned trucks: heavy-duty OD clutch pack upgrade is essential. Billet builds available for high-performance Cummins applications.
48RE/68RFE/AS69RC: ATF+4 — change every 20,000 miles for towing

It's common — especially on tuned trucks. The stock 68RFE OD clutch pack is undersized for Cummins torque when modified.

The AS69RC is an Aisin-built alternative — significantly more robust than the 68RFE. If your Ram has it, you're better off.
