Transmission History by Year β€” Ford Fusion

2006–2009: 5-speed automatic (5F35) on 2.3L I4.
2010–2012: 6-speed automatic (6F35) on 2.5L I4 and 3.0L V6.
2013–2020: 6-speed automatic (6F35) on 1.5L/2.5L I4.
2013–2020: 6-speed automatic (6F50) on 2.0L EcoBoost AWD.
2014–2020: e-CVT on Fusion Hybrid/Energi (Atkinson-cycle hybrid).

Known Ford Fusion Transmission Problems

  • 6F35 valve body solenoid wear causing harsh 1-2 shift β€” most common Fusion transmission complaint
  • 6F35 torque converter clutch shudder on 2.0L EcoBoost Fusion at highway speeds
  • 5F35 (2006–2009) clutch pack wear causing 2nd and 4th gear slip on high-mileage units
  • 6F50 AWD pump wear on 2.0L EcoBoost models under Chicago winter AWD demand
  • Fusion Hybrid e-CVT motor-generator seal failure causing fluid contamination

Warning Signs β€” When to Bring It In

  • Harsh 1-2 upshift, especially noticeable in city stop-and-go traffic
  • Vibration or shudder during light-throttle highway cruise (TCC shudder on 2.0L EcoBoost)
  • Slipping or flaring 2-3 upshift on older 5F35 units at high mileage
  • Delayed engagement from Park into Drive when transmission is cold
  • Check engine light with P0750–P0757 solenoid or P0741 TCC codes

Our Repair Process

The 6F35 in Fusion is one of the most commonly repaired Ford FWD transmissions. Solenoid failures are frequently repaired without a full rebuild ($450–750). For TCC shudder on EcoBoost models, Mercon LV fluid exchange is the first step. Full rebuild becomes necessary when clutch packs are damaged from driving through solenoid failure symptoms. The e-CVT hybrid unit requires hybrid-specific service procedures.

Fluid Specification

All 6F35 and 6F50 use Mercon LV. Never use Dexron or generic ATF β€” the friction modifiers differ. Fusion Hybrid e-CVT uses specific Ford Hybrid eCVT fluid. Change every 40,000 miles.

Repair Time Estimate

Solenoid repair: 1–2 days. Full 6F35 rebuild: 2–3 days. Hybrid eCVT: 3–4 days.

Ford Fusion FAQ

Common Ford Fusion Transmission Questions

Harsh 1-2 on the 6F35 is almost always solenoid 1 failure. It's one of the most common Ford repairs we do. Often repairable for $450–750 without a full rebuild β€” get a free diagnostic first.

The 6F50 is a more robust unit than the 6F35. It handles the EcoBoost's power well, but the AWD pump develops wear if fluid is neglected. Change every 40,000 miles.

The hybrid eCVT makes different sounds than a conventional automatic β€” some mechanical whine during the transition between EV and engine power is normal. Abnormal would be a grinding or metal-on-metal noise. Get a diagnostic if you're concerned.

For a Fusion with a 6F35 failure, a rebuild at our shop is $1,500–2,000 and comes with a lifetime warranty. Used transmissions typically come with 90 days. Rebuild is almost always the better value.

A properly rebuilt 6F35 with new solenoids, clutches, and seals regularly lasts 150,000+ additional miles. We back it with a lifetime warranty.
