1998–2004: 4-speed automatic (RE4R01A) on V6 models. 2005–2021: 5-speed automatic (RE5R05A) on 4.0L V6. 2022–2024: 9-speed automatic (9AT) on 3.8L V6 — all-new platform. 4WD models include BorgWarner transfer case.
The RE5R05A is Nissan's most robust automatic — when it fails, it's usually from high mileage and tow use rather than design weakness. Solenoid failures are repairable without a full rebuild in many cases. Coolant contamination from a failed cooler line requires immediate attention — coolant in ATF destroys clutch packs within miles of driving.
RE5R05A uses Nissan Matic-S ATF. RE4R01A uses Nissan Matic-D. Change every 30,000 miles for towing use.

RE5R05A solenoid A failure — very common on 2005–2015 Frontier. Often repairable for $450–700 without a full rebuild.
Coolant is mixing with ATF through a failed cooler line — a known issue on 2005–2015 models. Get it to a shop immediately. Driving with contaminated ATF destroys clutch packs quickly.
