2003–2007: 48RE 4-speed automatic (diesel/gas). 2007.5–2018: 68RFE 6-speed automatic (Cummins). 2019–present: Aisin AS69RC 6-speed automatic (Cummins diesel). Gas: 6-speed 65RFE or 8HP75.
The 68RFE is the most common failure on Cummins 2500/3500s — the overdrive clutch pack is undersized for the torque. We use Sonnax billet clutch upgrades and Alto Red Eagle friction kits. 48RE governor solenoid is a common fix on older trucks. The AS69RC is more robust but needs clean fluid — we service with Aisin ATF.

At factory power levels it's adequate, but the overdrive clutch pack is a known weak point — especially with aftermarket tunes that add torque. Upgraded rebuild kits with billet components are the long-term solution.
P0740 is lockup circuit failure — usually the TCC solenoid or converter clutch slipping. We diagnose with live data; if the solenoid tests good, the converter needs replacement.
The Aisin AS69RC (used in 2019+ Cummins trucks) is significantly stronger — Aisin-built, designed for high torque. It's more durable but still needs regular fluid service to last.
