2003 - 2014: Aisin TF-80SC 6-speed automatic. 2015 - present: Aisin AW TG-81SC 8-speed automatic (T5/T6/T8). Plug-in hybrid (T8): rear electric motor adds separate drive unit.
The TF-80SC is a shared Aisin unit - we have extensive experience rebuilding it from Volvo, Land Rover, and FCA applications. Solenoid body replacement resolves most shift quality issues. The TG-81SC 8-speed is more robust but needs genuine Aisin ATF. T8 rear motor bearing replacement is a dealer-only repair due to parts availability.
Volvo TF-0870/Aisin ATF (TF-80SC). Volvo/Aisin ATF for TG-81SC.
Verify exact spec on the dipstick label or owner's manual before fill. Recommended change interval: every 60,000 miles for normal driving, 30,000 miles under severe service (towing, stop-and-go, hot climates). Pan service typically takes 6 - 8 quarts; a full fluid exchange takes 10 - 14 quarts depending on cooler-line capacity.
Fluid service: same day. Solenoid: 1 day. Rebuild: 3 - 4 days.
Fluid service and inspection complete the same day. Solenoid or sensor replacement: 1 day. Torque converter or seal repair: 2 - 3 days. Full rebuild with road test: 4 - 6 days. Time estimates assume parts in stock - call (312) 626-8759 to verify availability for your specific vehicle.
Every vehicle needs diagnosis before anyone can promise a repair path. These are the situations we help organize before you decide what to do next.
Tell us when it happens, whether reverse still works, and if warning lights are on. A scan and fluid check come before guessing at a rebuild.
Fluid condition, leak location, and driving distance matter. If the vehicle is slipping badly or overheating, towing may be the safer next step.
A failed solenoid, valve body, converter, or internal clutch problem can lead to very different repair paths. The goal is a clear diagnosis and written estimate.
Every 40,000 miles. Volvo calls it lifetime, but we see TF-80SC failures correlate strongly with vehicles that never had a fluid change - 'lifetime' means the transmission's lifetime, not a long one.
Almost certainly TF-80SC solenoid body wear. This is the single most common XC90 transmission repair. Solenoid body replacement typically costs $650 - 950 and resolves the issue.
We service the front TG-81SC 8-speed on T8 models. The rear electric motor and its drive unit are dealer-only for parts and software integration.
Used TF-80SC units are risky - they have the same solenoid wear patterns as the original. A rebuilt unit with fresh solenoids and seals is a better long-term investment.
Volvo-branded Aisin ATF (TF-0870 spec). Do not use Dexron VI or generic ATF - it accelerates solenoid and valve body wear.
Same-day appointments available. Honest estimates, no surprises. We've been doing this since 1987.
