2004 - 2012: 4-speed automatic (4L60-E) on V8; 5-speed (Aisin) on 5-cyl; 4-speed on I4. 2015 - 2022: 6-speed automatic (6L50) on 2.5L I4 and 3.6L V6. 2015 - 2022: 8-speed automatic (8L45) on 3.6L V6 (ZR2 and Trail Boss). 2023 - 2024: 8-speed automatic (8L45) on all Colorado variants. 4WD models: Autotrac transfer case.
Colorado transmission work follows the same procedures as Silverado equivalents - the 6L50 is a lighter-duty version of the 6L80. Solenoid failures on the 6L50 are often repairable without a full rebuild. Off-road Colorado models (ZR2, Trail Boss) with the 8L45 need more frequent fluid changes due to elevated operating temperatures.
6L50 uses Dexron VI. 8L45 uses Dexron HP. 4L60-E uses Dexron VI. Change 6L50/6L80 every 45,000 miles; 8L45 every 45,000 miles (30,000 miles for off-road/tow use).
6L50 solenoid: 1 - 2 days. 6L50 rebuild: 2 - 3 days. 8L45 rebuild: 3 - 4 days.
Fluid service and inspection complete the same day. Solenoid or sensor replacement: 1 day. Torque converter or seal repair: 2 - 3 days. Full rebuild with road test: 4 - 6 days. Time estimates assume parts in stock - call (312) 626-8759 to verify availability for your specific vehicle.
Every vehicle needs diagnosis before anyone can promise a repair path. These are the situations we help organize before you decide what to do next.
Tell us when it happens, whether reverse still works, and if warning lights are on. A scan and fluid check come before guessing at a rebuild.
Fluid condition, leak location, and driving distance matter. If the vehicle is slipping badly or overheating, towing may be the safer next step.
A failed solenoid, valve body, converter, or internal clutch problem can lead to very different repair paths. The goal is a clear diagnosis and written estimate.
On a 2015 - 2022 Colorado, harsh 1-2 shift is almost always solenoid A failure in the 6L50. Often repairable without a full rebuild ($450 - 700). Get a free diagnostic.
No - 8L45 TCC shudder on ZR2 is a known issue. Start with a Dexron HP fluid exchange. If it persists after 500 miles, torque converter replacement is the fix.
Every 30,000 miles for off-road use - ZR2 and Trail Boss models work the transmission harder than street use.
Classic 4L60-E sun shell failure. Full rebuild required: $1,500 - 2,100. Common on 2004 - 2012 Colorado V8.
The 8L45 is a more sophisticated unit with better fuel efficiency. Failure modes are different - TCC shudder vs. solenoid issues - but both are repairable. The 8L45 requires Dexron HP (not standard Dexron VI).
Same-day appointments available. Honest estimates, no surprises. We've been doing this since 1987.
