1994–2002 (original): 4-speed automatic (Isuzu-sourced) on 3.2L V6. 2019–2024 (second gen): 9-speed automatic (9AT) on 3.5L V6 FWD and AWD. AWD (2019+): Real Time AWD with intelligent variable torque coupling.
The 2019+ Passport uses a Honda/ZF 9-speed automatic — complex but repairable. Software updates from Honda address some shift quality complaints. For TCC shudder, Honda DW-1 fluid exchange is the first step. The original 1994–2002 Passport was an Isuzu rebadge with a completely different drivetrain.
2019+ 9AT uses Honda ATF DW-1. Change every 30,000 miles — Honda's extended interval recommendation is not appropriate for Chicago stop-and-go.
9AT valve body service: 1–2 days. Full 9AT rebuild: 3–4 days.
