2009 - 2014: 6-speed automatic (A6MF1/A6LF2) standard; 8-speed automatic available on V8 models; rear-wheel drive configuration 2015 - 2016: 8-speed automatic (A8TR1) on all trims; paddleshift manual mode; updated torque converter clutch calibration Note: Genesis brand spun off as separate marque in 2017 - see Genesis G80 for later models
Diagnosis begins with a full scan for transmission and drivetrain codes, followed by a torque converter lock-up test under load. Fluid condition and level are checked - burnt ATF is a strong indicator of internal damage. Valve body solenoids are resistance-tested. If shudder is present, a torque converter flush with new Hyundai SP-IV ATF often resolves mild cases. Persistent shudder requires torque converter replacement. Valve body replacement covers most solenoid-related shift complaints. Full rebuild is reserved for units with internal clutch pack wear confirmed by pressure testing.
Hyundai SP-IV-M ATF (Genuine or approved equivalent); approximately 8.5 quarts for drain-and-fill; 10 quarts for full flush; do not substitute Dexron VI without confirming compatibility
Fluid service: same day; solenoid or valve body repair: 1 - 2 days; torque converter replacement: 2 - 3 days; full rebuild: 4 - 6 days
Every vehicle needs diagnosis before anyone can promise a repair path. These are the situations we help organize before you decide what to do next.
Tell us when it happens, whether reverse still works, and if warning lights are on. A scan and fluid check come before guessing at a rebuild.
Fluid condition, leak location, and driving distance matter. If the vehicle is slipping badly or overheating, towing may be the safer next step.
A failed solenoid, valve body, converter, or internal clutch problem can lead to very different repair paths. The goal is a clear diagnosis and written estimate.
This is typically torque converter clutch shudder - the lock-up clutch inside the torque converter slips at partial load. A fluid flush with fresh SP-IV-M ATF and a friction modifier additive often resolves mild cases. If shudder persists, the converter itself needs replacement.
Every 30,000 - 45,000 miles for city driving or towing. Hyundai lists it as 'lifetime' fluid in some manuals, but that is based on ideal conditions - Chicago stop-and-go heat degrades fluid faster.
Sometimes. Hyundai released several TCM calibration updates that improved shift feel on 2009 - 2013 models. A dealer or shop with the right scan tool can check whether your software is current.
Generally yes - the A8TR1 8-speed had fewer widespread complaints than the earlier 6-speed. The main vulnerabilities are solenoid wear and fluid contamination, both of which are preventable with regular service.
A full rebuild takes 4 - 6 business days at our shop. We keep common parts in stock for A6MF1 and A6LF2 units, which can speed up turnaround. We provide a loaner car or can arrange local transportation while your vehicle is in.
Same-day appointments available. Honest estimates, no surprises. We've been doing this since 1987.
