2002 - 2012: 545RFE 5-speed automatic. 2013 - 2018: 8HP70 (ZF 8-speed). 2019 - present: 8HP75 (ZF 8-speed). Some 2019+ eTorque: 8HP75 with mild hybrid.
545RFE solenoid packs are a known wear item - we replace the full pack and valve body separator plate. 8HP units are serviced with ZF LifeGuardFluid 8 and OEM filter; torque converter replacement resolves persistent shudder. Full rebuilds include updated solenoids, clutch packs, and pump bushings.
545RFE: Mopar ATF+4. 8HP70/75: ZF LifeGuardFluid 8.
Verify exact spec on the dipstick label or owner's manual before fill. Recommended change interval: every 60,000 miles for normal driving, 30,000 miles under severe service (towing, stop-and-go, hot climates). Pan service typically takes 6 - 8 quarts; a full fluid exchange takes 10 - 14 quarts depending on cooler-line capacity.
545RFE solenoid: 1 day. 8HP service: same day. Rebuild: 3 - 4 days.
Fluid service and inspection complete the same day. Solenoid or sensor replacement: 1 day. Torque converter or seal repair: 2 - 3 days. Full rebuild with road test: 4 - 6 days. Time estimates assume parts in stock - call (312) 626-8759 to verify availability for your specific vehicle.
Every vehicle needs diagnosis before anyone can promise a repair path. These are the situations we help organize before you decide what to do next.
Tell us when it happens, whether reverse still works, and if warning lights are on. A scan and fluid check come before guessing at a rebuild.
Fluid condition, leak location, and driving distance matter. If the vehicle is slipping badly or overheating, towing may be the safer next step.
A failed solenoid, valve body, converter, or internal clutch problem can lead to very different repair paths. The goal is a clear diagnosis and written estimate.
Almost always torque converter shudder on the 8HP. Start with a fluid and filter service using genuine ZF fluid - this resolves it in roughly 70% of cases. If shudder persists, the torque converter needs replacement.
Every 40,000 - 50,000 miles with ZF LifeGuardFluid 8. RAM marks it 'lifetime' but that's optimistic for a working truck - especially if you tow.
The solenoid pack is the most common cause - typically one or more solenoids short out under heat. We replace the full pack and inspect the valve body separator plate for wear.
Yes. We stock ZF 8HP rebuild kits with updated clutch packs and pump components. Most rebuilds are done in 3 - 4 days.
Yes - heat is the primary killer. Add a transmission temperature gauge and keep temps below 200 degrees F. Service the fluid every 30,000 miles if you tow regularly.
Same-day appointments available. Honest estimates, no surprises. We've been doing this since 1987.
