1998 - 2006: 4-speed automatic (AW50-42LE) on most models; 5-speed Geartronic on T6 twin-turbo 2007 - 2016: 6-speed Aisin TF-80SC Geartronic automatic; all engines including T6 3.0L 2007 - 2011 AWD (T6/3.2): Same TF-80SC paired with Haldex AWD system Final year 2016 - replaced by S90
Volvo S80 TF-80SC diagnosis begins with Volvo-compatible scan tool reading all transmission codes including manufacturer-specific codes not visible to generic OBD-II scanners. Mechatronic unit function is tested - this is the most common failure point. Fluid condition and metal particle content are inspected. Mechatronic replacement covers most solenoid-related shift complaints. Torque converter replacement addresses persistent shudder. AWD Haldex fluid replacement often resolves vibration on all-wheel drive models. Full rebuild is required for internal clutch pack wear confirmed by pressure testing.
Volvo TF-80SC: Volvo/Aisin T-IV ATF or approved equivalent, approximately 7 - 8 quarts; Haldex AWD: Haldex Gen 4 fluid, approximately 0.9 liters - must use correct spec
Fluid service: same day; mechatronic unit replacement: 1 - 2 days; torque converter: 2 - 3 days; Haldex service: same day; full rebuild: 4 - 6 days
Every vehicle needs diagnosis before anyone can promise a repair path. These are the situations we help organize before you decide what to do next.
Tell us when it happens, whether reverse still works, and if warning lights are on. A scan and fluid check come before guessing at a rebuild.
Fluid condition, leak location, and driving distance matter. If the vehicle is slipping badly or overheating, towing may be the safer next step.
A failed solenoid, valve body, converter, or internal clutch problem can lead to very different repair paths. The goal is a clear diagnosis and written estimate.
The mechatronic unit is an integrated assembly combining the valve body and solenoid pack for the TF-80SC transmission. Volvo and Aisin service it as a single unit - individual solenoids are not separately serviceable. Replacement cost is higher than a typical solenoid job but resolves most electronic shift complaints.
This is the classic TF-80SC symptom of mechatronic unit wear. The 3-2 downshift solenoid is the most stress-loaded in the valve body. A mechatronic replacement typically resolves this.
The TF-80SC is an Aisin-designed unit used in Volvo, Ford, and Opel vehicles. The fluid spec is Aisin T-IV compatible. Volvo sells their own labeled version but approved equivalents from Aisin or Pentosin work correctly.
Full rebuild runs $3,000 - 4,200. Remanufactured units are $3,600 - 5,000 installed. If only the mechatronic is failed, that repair is $1,100 - 1,800 and avoids a full rebuild.
Not recommended. Transmission codes often indicate reduced pressure or solenoid failure - continuing to drive risks damaging clutch packs that would otherwise survive. Bring it in for diagnosis before the repair scope grows.
Same-day appointments available. Honest estimates, no surprises. We've been doing this since 1987.
