How Long Does a Transmission Rebuild Take in Chicago?

How Long Does Transmission Rebuild Take β€” Chicago Transmission | Chicago IL
Expert transmission knowledge from Chicago's most trusted shop since 1987.

The most common question we hear after "how much does it cost?" is "how long will it take?" The honest answer: most transmission rebuilds at Chicago Transmission take 3–4 business days from drop-off to pickup. Here's what happens during those days β€” and what can make it shorter or longer.

Day 1: Teardown and Diagnosis

After your vehicle arrives, a technician performs a road test to confirm symptoms, then pulls the transmission. Removal time varies by vehicle: a rear-wheel-drive Silverado might take 2–3 hours; a front-wheel-drive Honda or Toyota with the engine and transmission sharing a cradle can take 4–5 hours.

The transmission is then completely disassembled on a work bench. Every component is cleaned ultrasonically and inspected. Hard parts (drums, shafts, pump body) are measured with micrometers against factory specifications. The technician documents every component that's out of spec β€” this is when we know the full scope of the rebuild.

At the end of Day 1, we call you with a confirmation of the diagnosis and any updates to the estimate. If the internal condition was different from what external symptoms suggested β€” better or worse β€” we tell you now, before proceeding.

Day 2: Parts and Assembly

Day 2 is parts acquisition and reassembly. In most cases, we stock rebuild kits for the most common transmissions (4L60E, 6L80, 6R80, U660E, Honda 5AT, ZF 6HP, ZF 8HP) β€” which means parts are on the bench when we start assembly. For less common units, parts may arrive Day 2 morning via overnight from our suppliers.

Reassembly follows a strict sequence: the valve body and pump are assembled first, then the geartrain, clutch packs, bands (on units that use them), and housing. Every friction disc, steel plate, seal, and gasket is new. Clearances are measured β€” clutch pack clearance, end-play, pump clearance β€” and adjusted to factory spec.

Day 3: Reinstallation and Initial Testing

The rebuilt transmission is reinstalled in the vehicle with a new filter, correct OEM-spec fluid, and new cooler lines if the old ones were cracked or corroded. The vehicle is started and the transmission is cycled through all gears in the driveway β€” checking for leaks, correct pressure readings, and smooth engagement in Drive and Reverse.

Then the road test begins β€” minimum 10 miles, including surface streets and highway. We test every gear, both upshifts and downshifts, under light and heavy throttle. We look for any roughness, hesitation, or unexpected behavior before the vehicle goes back to the customer.

Day 4 (If Needed): Adjustment and Final Road Test

Sometimes a rebuilt transmission needs minor adjustment after the initial road test β€” a band adjustment, a line pressure tweak, or a TCM relearn procedure. Day 4 is buffer time for these adjustments and a final quality check. For most rebuilds on common vehicles, the vehicle is actually ready end of Day 3.

What Makes It Take Longer?

  • Rare or European transmissions: ZF 8HP, 722.9, and DSG units have longer parts lead times. Plan 4–5 days for BMW, Mercedes, and Audi.
  • CVT rebuilds: CVT teardown and reassembly is more intricate. Plan 3–4 days.
  • Heavy-duty diesel: 68RFE and 5R110W rebuilds for Ram and Ford diesel trucks take 4–5 days.
  • Unexpected damage: If internal inspection reveals worn hard parts (pump body, drums, shafts) that weren't suspected, parts must be sourced. We'll call you immediately with a revised timeline.
  • TCM reprogramming: Some vehicles (BMW, Mercedes, newer domestics) require computer programming after rebuild. Usually done same-day but adds a few hours.

What Makes It Faster?

If your vehicle uses one of our most common transmissions (4L60E, 6R80, 6L80, U660E, Honda B7XA, 545RFE), we typically have the rebuild kit in-house. Combined with efficient scheduling, these vehicles can sometimes be completed in 2.5–3 days.

If you call ahead before towing your vehicle in and give us the year/make/model, we can pre-order the rebuild kit and potentially have it ready when you arrive.
