P2715 is the "stuck on" companion to P2714. Where P2714 means Pressure Control Solenoid D isn't applying enough pressure to its clutch circuit, P2715 means it's applying full pressure when commanded to be off or modulated. For the higher gears that PCS-D controls, this typically produces harsh engagement of 5th or 6th gear or a torque converter clutch that applies too aggressively.
How "Stuck On" Differs from "Performance" Codes
The P27xx series solenoid codes follow the same pattern as P079x codes:
- P2714 (Performance/Stuck Off): The solenoid isn't applying enough pressure β affected clutch slips or can't fully engage
- P2715 (Stuck On): The solenoid is applying maximum pressure regardless of command β clutch engages with full force, producing harsh shifts
A solenoid stuck on typically produces more immediate noticeable symptoms than one stuck off, because the harsh engagement is felt on every shift into the affected gears.
Common Causes of P2715
- Solenoid valve mechanically stuck open: Varnish from degraded ATF holds the valve open. This is the most common cause and sometimes responds to a fluid exchange if the varnish is soft.
- Internal solenoid spring failure: The return spring that closes the valve when de-energized breaks or weakens, preventing the valve from closing.
- Wiring short to power: Continuous voltage applied to the solenoid coil keeps it energized even when the TCM tries to turn it off.
- TCM output driver failure: The TCM's internal transistor for the PCS-D channel fails in the on state, continuously driving the solenoid.
Symptoms of P2715
- Check engine light with P2715 stored
- Harsh upshift into 5th or 6th gear β feels like a bump or clunk at highway merge speeds
- Torque converter clutch engaging with a jolt rather than smoothly (if TCC is on the same circuit)
- Transmission hunting between gears at highway cruise β the stuck-on solenoid creates a pressure imbalance that the TCM fights against
- Limp mode in severe cases
- Companion codes: P2714, P0869 (high pressure), P0700
Diagnosis Steps
- Check fluid condition β varnished fluid is often the root cause
- Measure solenoid resistance β a shorted solenoid reads lower resistance than spec
- Check wiring for shorts to power β measure voltage at the solenoid connector with key on and TCM commanding the solenoid off
- If wiring and solenoid check out electrically, suspect TCM output driver failure
