5R55S: Solenoid replacement possible if valve body is otherwise in good shape ($500 - 750). Full rebuild if coast clutch drum is damaged ($1,600 - 2,100). 6F35: Solenoid pack replacement resolves most cases ($450 - 700). 6R80: Same approach as F-150 - solenoid pack first, rebuild if internal damage exists.
5R55S: Mercon V ATF 6F35 and 6R80: Mercon LV - change every 40,000 miles
Verify exact spec on the dipstick label or owner's manual before fill. Recommended change interval: every 60,000 miles for normal driving, 30,000 miles under severe service (towing, stop-and-go, hot climates). Pan service typically takes 6 - 8 quarts; a full fluid exchange takes 10 - 14 quarts depending on cooler-line capacity.
Solenoid service: 1 - 2 days. Full rebuild: 3 - 4 business days.
Fluid service and inspection complete the same day. Solenoid or sensor replacement: 1 day. Torque converter or seal repair: 2 - 3 days. Full rebuild with road test: 4 - 6 days. Time estimates assume parts in stock - call (312) 626-8759 to verify availability for your specific vehicle.
Every vehicle needs diagnosis before anyone can promise a repair path. These are the situations we help organize before you decide what to do next.
Tell us when it happens, whether reverse still works, and if warning lights are on. A scan and fluid check come before guessing at a rebuild.
Fluid condition, leak location, and driving distance matter. If the vehicle is slipping badly or overheating, towing may be the safer next step.
A failed solenoid, valve body, converter, or internal clutch problem can lead to very different repair paths. The goal is a clear diagnosis and written estimate.
On a 2002 - 2005 Explorer with 5R55S, that's the 3-4 solenoid or coast clutch drum. Get a diagnostic - solenoid replacement is possible if drum damage is limited.
6F35 harsh shifts usually point to solenoid wear - often fixable for $450 - 700 without a full rebuild. Get a diagnostic before assuming the worst.
On V6 Explorers (2011+), yes - they share the 6R80. On 2.0L EcoBoost Explorers they use the front-wheel-drive-based 6F35, which is different.
3 - 4 business days.
The AWD transfer case (PTU) on Explorer is a separate failure point - fluid leaks are common. We service the PTU at the same time as transmission work.
Same-day appointments available. Honest estimates, no surprises. We've been doing this since 1987.
