For 10R80 shudder: start with Mercon ULV fluid exchange ($149 - 199). If shudder persists after 500 miles, torque converter replacement is the permanent fix ($550 - 850 installed). For 6R80 solenoid failure (P07xx codes): solenoid pack replacement ($450 - 650) resolves most cases. If internal clutch damage has occurred from running on a failed solenoid, a full rebuild is required ($1,800 - 2,400). For 4R75E high-mileage wear: full rebuild is the right call - targeted repairs rarely stick on worn valve bodies.
6R80: Motorcraft Mercon LV ATF - change every 40,000 miles in Chicago driving conditions 10R80: Motorcraft Mercon ULV ATF - change every 40,000 miles; critical for TCC shudder prevention
Fluid service: same day. Solenoid replacement: 1 - 2 days. Full rebuild: 3 - 4 business days.
Every vehicle needs diagnosis before anyone can promise a repair path. These are the situations we help organize before you decide what to do next.
Tell us when it happens, whether reverse still works, and if warning lights are on. A scan and fluid check come before guessing at a rebuild.
Fluid condition, leak location, and driving distance matter. If the vehicle is slipping badly or overheating, towing may be the safer next step.
A failed solenoid, valve body, converter, or internal clutch problem can lead to very different repair paths. The goal is a clear diagnosis and written estimate.
This is the 10R80 torque converter clutch (TCC) shudder - the most common complaint on 2017 - 2020 F-150 EcoBoost models. Start with a Mercon ULV fluid exchange. If shudder returns within 500 miles, the torque converter itself needs replacement ($550 - 850).
With proper Mercon LV fluid changes every 40,000 miles, the 6R80 regularly reaches 200,000+ miles. The solenoid body typically needs attention between 80 - 120k - catch it early and it's a $450 - 650 repair, not a rebuild.
Not necessarily. P0750 (shift solenoid A) on the 6R80 is usually a solenoid failure - we can replace the solenoid pack for $450 - 650. Only if internal clutch damage has occurred does a full rebuild become necessary.
If the truck is otherwise in good shape, absolutely. A rebuilt 6R80 or 10R80 with our 2-year / 24,000-mile warranty is a better investment than a used unit with unknown history. F-150 chassis easily reach 300,000 miles with good maintenance.
