The Dodge Ram's 545RFE (2002β2012, 5-speed) and 68RFE (2007βpresent, 6-speed) transmissions are workhorses β but they have documented weaknesses that Chicago mechanics see regularly, especially on trucks used for towing or high-mileage daily driving.
545RFE: The 5-Speed in Ram 1500 (2002β2012)
The 545RFE was Ram's primary transmission for the Hemi-powered Ram 1500 from 2002 through 2012. It's a generally robust unit that fails predictably when neglected or used beyond its towing capacity.
Common 545RFE Problems
- Overdrive band failure: The overdrive band wears or breaks, causing loss of overdrive gear (5th) and sometimes 4th. Symptom: the truck won't upshift past 4th or hunts between gears at highway speed.
- Solenoid pack failure: The solenoid block controls all shift logic electronically. When it fails, you get erratic shifts, stuck in gear, or no upshift. Common codes: P0750, P0755, P0760.
- Input shaft seal leak: The 545RFE is known for ATF leaks at the front pump and input shaft area on high-mileage trucks.
- Throttle valve (TV) cable issues (pre-2006): Early 545RFE trucks had TV cable adjustment issues causing harsh shifts and premature band wear.
68RFE: The 6-Speed in Ram 2500/3500 HD (2007βPresent)
The 68RFE is Ram's heavy-duty 6-speed, standard in the 2500 and 3500 series with the 6.7L Cummins diesel. It's under enormous stress from the factory β the Cummins produces more torque than the 68RFE was originally designed to handle at stock tune, and virtually all diesel Ram HD trucks run tunes that push it further.
Common 68RFE Problems
- Overdrive clutch failure: The most common 68RFE failure. The overdrive drum clutch packs burn out, causing loss of 4th, 5th, or 6th gear. Trucks used for heavy towing see this at 60,000β100,000 miles. Tuned trucks may fail at 40,000 miles.
- Flex plate cracking: The flex plate connecting the engine to the converter cracks under high torque loads β Cummins diesel trucks with performance tunes are especially susceptible.
- TCC shudder: Similar to GM 6L80 shudder, the 68RFE torque converter clutch wears under heavy towing loads.
- Harsh 1-2 upshift: A known calibration issue addressed by FCA through PCM updates.
68RFE Codes
P0700 (transmission control system fault) is the umbrella code that often accompanies 68RFE failures. More specific codes like P0730 (incorrect gear ratio), P0731βP0734 (specific gear ratio errors), and P0740/P0741 (TCC fault) narrow down the failure location.

Towing and the Ram Transmission
Chicago's flat terrain is easier on transmission than hilly regions, but stop-and-go traffic on interstates (I-90, I-94, I-290) generates significant heat for trucks towing trailers. If you tow regularly, transmission fluid service every 20,000β25,000 miles (rather than the manufacturer's 45,000-mile recommendation) will significantly extend the life of both the 545RFE and 68RFE.
Signs that towing has stressed your transmission: darker-than-normal fluid smell after a tow, hesitation when pulling away from a stop with a load, or higher-than-normal transmission temperature gauge readings.
