The Ford Explorer's two most common transmission complaints β shudder at highway speed and harsh cold shifts β are well-documented and in most cases fixable without a full rebuild. Knowing which transmission your Explorer has and what Ford's published fixes are will help you avoid unnecessary repairs.
Which Transmission Does Your Explorer Have?
- 2011β2019 Explorer (FWD/AWD V6): 6F35 6-speed transaxle β the source of most shudder complaints
- 2011β2019 Explorer (4WD V6 or Sport/Platinum): 6R80 6-speed β same as the F-150, more robust unit
- 2020+ Explorer: 10-speed automatic β more refined but a newer platform with fewer documented high-mileage patterns
6F35: The Primary Shudder Transmission
The 6F35 is a Ford-GM co-developed FWD/AWD transaxle used in the Explorer, Edge, Fusion, and Escape. It's a capable transmission but is known for torque converter clutch (TCC) shudder, particularly on 2011β2015 Explorers with higher mileage.
Symptoms
- Vibration or shudder at 40β55 mph that disappears above 60 or below 40
- Feeling like you're driving over rumble strips at steady highway speed
- Shudder more pronounced when the transmission has warmed up (first 5β10 miles may feel fine)
- May come and go β worse in hot weather or after extended highway driving
Ford's Published Fix
Ford issued TSB 14-0194 and subsequent updates specifically addressing 6F35 TCC shudder. The recommended fix is a transmission fluid drain and fill using Motorcraft MERCON LV fluid (not a universal substitute) plus a friction modifier additive. This resolves TCC shudder in the majority of cases where the converter friction material is still serviceable.
Important: many oil change shops use a universal ATF that's not compatible with the 6F35's TCC friction specification. If your Explorer has had fluid changes at a quick-lube shop, there's a good chance the current fluid is making the shudder worse.
When the Fluid Change Doesn't Fix It
If the TCC friction disc is worn through, no fluid will fix the shudder. Torque converter replacement is required. Cost: $600β$950 installed on the 6F35.
6R80: Less Common Problems, But They Exist
The 6R80 in 4WD Explorers is the same unit as in the F-150 β a more robust RWD-based transmission adapted for the Explorer's transfer case. Common issues on high-mileage 6R80 Explorers:
- TCC shudder: Same mechanism as the 6F35 but less common β the 6R80 has a more robust converter
- Harsh 1-2 shift: Valve body wear or solenoid response time
- P0741 (TCC stuck off): Solenoid or converter failure
Common to Both: Cold-Start Harsh Shifts
Both 6F35 and 6R80 Explorers can shift firmly during the first few minutes in cold Chicago weather. This is mostly normal β the transmission adaptive shift tables adjust for cold fluid viscosity. If it's severe (clunking or banging shifts), a fluid exchange often corrects it.
Chicago Repair Costs
- Fluid exchange with MERCON LV + friction modifier: $100β$160
- Torque converter replacement (6F35): $600β$950
- Torque converter replacement (6R80): $700β$1,100
- Solenoid repair (P0741, shift codes): $350β$750
- Full rebuild if needed: $2,000β$3,200
